X-Men: First Class, Thor, Green Lantern, Captain America, Batman, Wolverine and Spiderman, to name just a few, will make their return to the silver screen. But there is another hero flying back into the cineplex, the Man of Steel himself, Superman.
British actor Henry Cavill (The Tudors) has been chosen by director Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen) and producer Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight) to become Hollywood’s newest Man of Steel. During his screen test, Cavill was asked to don a replica of Christopher Reeve’s Superman suit, but was forwarned it would be an “awesome achievement” if he could impress Snyder and Nolan in that suit.
Cavill was feeling less than confident about his ability to fill out the costume, having just finished shooting The Cold Light of Day with Bruce Willis, a part that required to him to lose the abs and muscle tone he had put on for the mythical film Immortals. With the help of an assistant, Cavill recalls the moment he slipped into the famous spandex suit: “All I could think was: Oh, god. They’re going to look at me and go ‘He’s not Superman. Not a chance.’ The actor inside me was going: You’re not ready! You’re not ready!”
Snyder recalls the audition differently. “Henry walked out and no one laughed. He exuded this kind of crazy, but calm confidence that just made me go ‘Wow. We’ve found our Superman.”
