Broadway’s Jesus Christ Superstar may have to end its run early in July unless it can boost ticket sales, according to producers.
The news release reads: “The producers of the Broadway production of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ have announced that unless business improves, the musical will close at the Neil Simon Theatre on Sunday, July 1. As of that date, the show will have played 116 regular performances and 24 previews.”
The show opened March 22 and received Tony, Drama Desk and Drama League nominations for Best Musical Revival. Josh Young received a Tony nomination and won a Theatre World Award for his portrayal of Judas Iscariot. The cast also features Paul Nolan as Jesus Christ, Chilina Kennedy as Mary Magdalene, Tom Hewitt as Pontius Pilate, Bruce Dow as King Herod, Marcus Nance as Caiaphas and Aaron Walpole as Annas.
