Released on this day in 1983, Francis Ford Coppola‘s The Outsiders remains a sentimental favorite drama for many fans, particularly because it features so many young actors who later became stars. For the actors involved with the film, even years later they all remember The Outsiders was one of the toughest auditions they ever went through.
In the above clips, Fred Roos, the casting director and producer of The Outsiders, speaks about how the film was cast and how it was very different than a normal audition, where everyone who was testing for the film came in for a large group audition whereas all the actors were auditioning together. Vintage and current interviews with many actors, including Ralph Macchio, Helen Slater, Kate Capshaw, Adam Baldwin, Glenn Scarpelli, Anthony Michael Hall, Matt Dillon, Catherine Mary Stewart, C. Thomas Howell, Tom Cruise, Rob Lowe, Diane Lane, Patrick Swayze, and many others, are featured. Check the clips out above, and stay gold.
