Widely criticized for playing fast-and-loose with facts, the 2015 drama about the CBS “Memogate” controversy Truth is nevertheless best viewed as a movie that depicts what not to do as a journalist. It fared poorly at the box office, and critics were mixed on the performance of Robert Redford, who played disgraced news anchor Dan Rather. Truth is now available on DVD.
In a rare arrangement, Redford sat for a conversation presented by the Screen Actors Guild Foundation and The New School College of Performing Arts School of Drama that was moderated by the man he portrayed in the film, Dan Rather. The two discuss the real-life events that inspired the film, how journalism has changed since the scandal, and Redford’s lifelong commitment to environmental activism.
