One of the categories that isn’t recognized by an Academy Award — though many think it should be recognized by one — is casting. While there are four awards handed out for acting, the casting directors whose job is to assemble those award-winning casts are not recognized by an Oscar. While the Emmy Awards have “Outstanding Casting” awards, without an Oscar for casting the highest achievement for a casting director in film are the Artios Awards, which have been presented by the Casting Society of America since 1985. The 2016 Artios Awards will be presented tonight.
To recognize some of the premiere casting directors, SAG-AFTRA put together a panel of two Artios Awards nominees (and previous winners), Eyde Belasco (Transparent) and Tracy Lilienfield (Grace and Frankie). The discussion is moderated by actress Jessica Gardner. The pair speak about the details behind casting decisions and also share anecdotes about casting the two series they are nominated for.
